The "Wii Remote Incident" of 2007: Why We Invented the TV Protector
Do you remember the "Wii-mote" craze of the mid-2000s? It was 2007. The Nintendo Wii was the must-have gadget, families were getting active in their living rooms, and unbeknownst to us a global "epidemic" of shattered glass was about to begin.
In our house, 2007 started with a miracle. As a family with seven children, money was always tight. When we won a Nintendo Wii in a competition, it felt like we’d struck gold. Our parents had been saving for months to buy our very first flat-screen TV so we could finally play together.
It lasted exactly one week.
The Crack Heard ‘Round the House
We all remember the moment it happened. A stray swing from a nephew, a flying remote, and that sickening crack. In an instant, the centerpiece of our living room and months of our parents' hard-earned savings was gone.
Back then, "screen protectors" didn't exist. The first iPhone was only just being announced in the US; the idea of putting a protector over a screen was unheard of. We searched everywhere for a solution to save our TV, but there was nothing.
With nine mouths to feed, there was no budget for a replacement. We had to live with that shattered screen and a very important lesson.
From a Monmouthshire Garage to a Global First
Our parents didn't want any other family to feel that "gut-punch" moment of losing a massive investment in a split second. They went into our garage near Monmouthshire and did what no one else was doing: they invented the world's first TV screen protector.
We weren’t a big corporation. We were a husband-and-wife team trying to solve a real-world family problem. We realized that as TVs were getting thinner and more expensive, they were also getting more fragile.
19 Years and 7 Siblings Later
Today, our business has moved from that small garage to our warehouse in Weston-super-Mare, but the heart of the company remains the same.
All seven of the children from that 2007 story now work in the business. We grew up in a high-energy, high-traffic home, so when we say our Ultima 4mm protectors are "family-tested," we mean it. We’ve spent nearly two decades perfecting the optical clarity and impact resistance of our protector because we know exactly what’s at stake: your peace of mind.
Why It Matters More in 2025
The TVs of 2007 were "bricks" compared to the OLED and QLED screens of today. Modern screens are thinner than a smartphone and can be destroyed by something as small as a plastic toy or a set of keys.
We started this journey because of a Wii remote, but we continue it because we believe a family's "treat" should be protected.
Don't wait for your own "Wii-mote incident." Protect your investment with the people who invented the industry.
